What Do State Legislature Wins Mean For Upcoming Races? 

Missy Cotter Smasal, a Navy veteran and former small business owner, is running to unseat Kiggans. In an interview with The Messenger, Cotter Smasal said she was “thrilled” after seeing Democrats’ successes in the state during this year’s election, and pointed to the results of a specific Virginia House of Delegates seat that sits in her district as a sign for what’s to come. 

“I’ve been knocking on doors with candidates across the district, and just thrilled that we were able to see Michael Feggans, who’s here in Virginia Beach, not only win the seat and do what’s right for voters, but resoundingly win that seat,” she said, referring to House District 97 — one of the more competitive races in the area — where Delegate-elect Michael Feggans beat the Republican incumbent. 

“This is where voters are going to speak loudly in 2024, right here in Virginia Beach and coastal Virginia,” Cotter Smasal said. 

Inside Elections analyst and reporter Jacob Rubashkin agreed that Feggans’ win was a good sign for Democrats, however, he said Republicans saw some wins that night in the district, too…”
